Endocrinology 6 min read

What is PCOS?

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder common among women of reproductive age. Women with PCOS may have infrequent or prolonged menstrual periods or excess male hormone (androgen) levels.

Common Signs

  • Irregular periods or no periods at all
  • Excess facial and body hair (hirsutism)
  • Severe acne and male-pattern baldness
  • Polycystic ovaries (enlarged ovaries containing follicles)
  • Difficulty conceiving (infertility)

Complications

If left unmanaged, PCOS can lead to serious conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, problems with the heart and blood vessels, and uterine cancer.
